Zaza and I started with a basket full of rocks and seeds and pine cones and twigs, a tray full of shells and glass beads, and also a bucket of sandbox sand. I used a piece of broken flower pot to make a bed, a nasturtium leaf as a blanket, and a lavender blossom as a pillow. I hope our garden fairies are comfortable here (on the days the sprinkler doesn't go off!).

Basically Fairy Ice Cream is milk, water, honey, and a few flowers like lavender and nasturtiums, and some mint, all frozen in the freezer and then left in the garden.

It took them a few days to eat it, and they even took the cup!

Alfred and I went to Storyopolis for a booksigning by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. You might know them as the author and illustrator of the Spiderwick Chronicles. Holly read, and we got to watch Tony draw. Tony also drew a very cool picture in one of my books after I showed him my seeing stone. It was a fun afternoon.

Fairies or not?

Actually, here's how he did it:

"Using an 8 x 10 inch camera fitted with a darkening filter, Sato makes lengthy exposures of up to two hours. During that time, he moves through the landscape, pausing periodically, counting to ten, with a mirror to reflect sunlight back at the camera. A reflective triangular frame is mounted around the camera lens so he can see whether the light is being accurately reflected at the camera. Because Sato remains in slow but constant motion throughout the long exposure, he is invisible in the photograph. Only the points of light testify to his movement. "

My Garden Fairies

I have fairies in my garden.

I've never seen them, but using a seeing stone I think I have caught glimpses of them.

Well, anyway, their names are:

Peaseblossom
Milkweed
and Mustardseed.

I know that they live in my garden because they leave me things. Usually they leave me things that I can use to make them something. I made them this house, and I think they like it because the day after I put it in the garden there was a path of glass leaves leading up to it!

After I read The Spiderwick Chronicles, I wanted to really study fairies. When I started first grade, I found a friend called Alfie (or Alfred) who helped me study them. And with a little help from Care and Feeding of Sprites, I learned a little bit more about how to see them and study them.

At the begining of Pre-Kindergarten, we had a new student. Her name was Lily. I'd been looking for somebody who believed in fairies and who would help me make things for them, and Lily seemed like the right sort of person.

She came to my house for a playdate and we decorated a fairy house made from two big clamshells, and left it in my garden. We also hunted for fairies with flashlights.

And sure enough, Lily started leaving things for the fairies in her neighborhood, and they began leaving her little treasures too! Later, Lily moved to a house in a canyon, where she was really out in nature and where she saw all kinds of birds and animals, and the fairies in my garden would send messages to the fairies in her canyon using their friends the birds!
